How to Promote Your Podcast?

Want to speak your heart out in your podcast? Go ahead, knock yourself out as the world (or, in your case, the internet) is your oyster. But hold on a second, do you know how to promote a podcast and increase its reach? If not, then you should postpone your first podcast for a while.

Without a proper plan to promote your podcast, no matter how great content you create, it won’t reach the target audience, and there would be no point in uploading it. Therefore, learning promotion strategies to boost your podcast is quite vital for you as a podcaster.

In today’s article, we’re going to break down the 13 best tactics you can apply to your podcast to increase its reach and make people want to listen to all episodes of it continuously without skipping a single day.

13 Top Tips to Promote a Podcast

Before you get ready to take over the podcast world by applying these tactics, you must know that thanks to several podcast websites like Buzz Sprout or Apple iTunes, the competition for getting the audience’s attention has gotten quite intense.

So, it might take you a while to be a successful podcaster, but if you apply the following tactics consistently, things might speed up for you.

1. Ask to Subscribe

Start with the most basic promotion tactic, which is asking listeners to subscribe to your podcast. Basically, most of the listeners just enjoy the podcast without ever subscribing, which means that they may or may not come back to listen to your next stream.

To avoid this situation and to establish a solid fan base, you should request your listeners to kindly subscribe to your podcast. You can say something like, please subscribe to the podcast to get a notification as soon as I upload the next episode.

Most podcasters add a sentence like this, either at the start or end of a stream, to increase their podcast subscribers. Through this step, you’ll be able to increase your regular listeners, and the word about your podcast will reach more people, which will make it even more famous.

2. Release Three Episodes Daily

If you upload a 20 minutes podcast daily, it won’t be enough to hold the listeners’ attention, and they will start looking for podcasts with longer or more episodes. That’s why you need to upload three episodes of your podcast daily and make sure that each episode’s run time is at least 40 minutes.

Following this tactic will reduce the risk of losing regular listeners and attract new listeners to check out your podcast. However, keep in mind that you shouldn’t compromise the quality of your podcast just to increase the quantity. Keep quality and quantity in a balance if you want things to work out well.

3. Know the Right Time

Unlike music, the podcast isn’t something you can listen to at any time. Most people listen to podcasts when they are in a specific mood or place. It means that you need to find out the hours of the day in which your audience prefers listening to podcasts.

Now, these hours differ from audience to audience. For example, if you are hosting a podcast of 10 to 20 minutes in the morning, students or office workers might listen to it on their way to school or work. But if it’s a long one, your audience might prefer listening to it at night before going to sleep.

Therefore, you need to keep an eye on your audience’s behavior patterns and find out which hours are most suitable for them. When you upload your podcast episode at the right time, more people listen to it, and its organic reach boosts. Since this tactic can yield amazing results, you must add it to your list right away.

4. Use Your Guest’s Audience to Promote

If you’re hosting the kind of podcast where you invite influencers, celebrities, or successful entrepreneurs for interviews, then you can use their audience to promote your podcast. Since most of these people have a huge fan following, it would be easier to get their attention and make them listen to your podcast just to hear some words from their favorite influencer.

To apply this tactic, you can use social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook. All you got to do is tag your guest in the post where you mention something like, This week’s guest will be (celebrity name). As soon as you tag the celebrity, their fans will know and come to your podcast on the launch day, which will increase your listeners and exposure.

5. Promote on Social Media

You simply can’t forget social media cross-promotion when it comes to promotion of any kind. With billions of people spending hours on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter app, these platforms have become the best choice for promoting a podcast.

First, set up an official page for your podcast on these social media platforms, and then start uploading banners and promotion posts there. Soon people interested in the topic of your podcast will start gathering around and will visit your podcast to enjoy the content.

Remember that it takes time to build a fan following on social media platforms, but you can always run paid ads to promote your podcast on these platforms effectively and quickly.

6. Publish as a YouTube Video

There’s no rule in the podcast guide saying that podcasts must be in audio file formats, right? And since there’s no restriction, most podcasters these days are uploading their content on YouTube long videos.

The advantage of publishing podcasts on YouTube is that it’s easier to attract the audience on this platform rather than on a podcast hosting site. Even the podcasting legend Joe Rogan himself has published several podcasts on YouTube, and some of them are even 3 hours long.

So, if you find it difficult to attract an audience on a podcast site, start uploading content on YouTube, and since people trust YouTube, it would become easier for you to get more listeners there.

7. Submit to Podcast Aggregators and Directories

Several online podcast directories and aggregators with millions of regular listeners and provide them with fresh content for each niche consistently. If you are just starting out in the podcast industry, then you should submit your podcast to one of many online podcast aggregators. They will place your content in a relevant category where people can come and enjoy it.

By chance, if people liked your voice and message, they would start visiting your podcast to listen to more of your content, which will increase your potential followers and organic reach.

8. Run a Giveaway

A traditional, old but effective method of getting the audience’s attention is running a giveaway. You can select names from your regular listeners and send them gifts to encourage them and thank them for listening to the podcast consistently.

Through this tactic, you not only convince those listeners to stick with you but inspire others to listen to your podcast regularly, so one day they too could get recognized as a true fans and receive gifts from you.

9. Be a Guest

Collaborate with your fellow podcasters and Starr as a guest on someone else’s podcast. Now, when you become a guest in a podcast, the listeners automatically get interested in your opinion, and if they like it, they will definitely visit your podcast to listen to more of your talks.

That’s why sometimes being a guest on a podcast instead of hosting one gets beneficial for your own podcast. But to execute this strategy properly, you need to have a social circle and good friendships with fellow podcasters. So, start reaching out to podcasters within your niche as soon as possible if you want to reap the benefits of this tactic.

10. Share Reviews and Testimonials

Sometimes you got to prove that your podcast is worth listening to attract the audience, and for that, you need to share listeners’ reviews and testimonials.

If anyone has ever praised your podcast on social media or another place, make sure to feature it on your podcast. Using this tactic will increase people’s trust in your podcast and appeal to them to check it out and see why people are praising it so much.

11. Create a Website

Setting up an official website for your podcast is an excellent way of promoting it and showing that it’s legit. You can easily upload all of your content there in different archives and even make playlists according to the nature of topics.

Also, you can write blog posts to explain what you talked about in the podcast and add show notes to share the key points of an episode with the viewers. You should also add a section on your landing page that can take your visitors directly to your podcast hosting site, where they can listen to your content.

Ask your developer to add an apple smart banner on the site that pops up when someone opens it on iOS mobile device. The benefit of the smart banner is that a visitor can simply tap on it, and he will be redirected to apple podcasts where they can listen to your stream, hence visitors to listener conversion.

12. Add Links to Your Email Signature

If you’re willing to go the extra mile to promote your podcast, you should add email marketing to your plan as well. You can send the link to your podcast to your colleagues and fellows via mail and request them to check it out.

Or you can keep it subtle and add the link of your podcast in your email signature, so people can see it whenever you send them a mail. Eventually, people will get curious about what it is and end up clicking on it, which will take them to your podcast.

Now, the effectiveness of this tactic is less than social media platforms, but it’s quite an old trick from the book, so it won’t hurt to try it.

13. Buy Podcast Listeners
