YouTube Shorts is a relatively new section on YouTube that offers creators an exciting way to share brief, vertical videos up to 60 seconds in length. It gives viewers the same experience as scrolling through Instagram Reels or the TikTok feed. Shorts have also quickly become one of the best ways to capture attention and amass thousands of views overnight.
That means increasing views on your Shorts content can help grow your audience and boost your potential for generating income. But while Shorts offer a quick way to gain massive engagement, many creators are still struggling to get views.
So much content is being uploaded daily, making it harder to stand out. With that in mind, below are some common reasons why your YouTube shorts are not getting views and actionable solutions that can help your content shine.
9 Possible Reasons That Make Your YouTube Shorts Not Get Views
Here are the top 9 potential reasons why your YouTube shorts are not getting views and what you can do to get more people to watch your content.
1. Your Shorts Are Not Gaining Algorithm Advantage
YouTube Shorts that fail to gain algorithmic favor often struggle to amass views. That could happen due to incomplete metadata and a low viewer engagement rate.
So, if your Shorts have missing titles, descriptions, and relevant tags, that could hinder the algorithm’s ability to understand and recommend your content to the right audience. Also, if the content has a low watch time and engagement, that may signal to the YouTube algorithm that you have poor-quality content.
Effective Solution
To fix this issue, provide complete metadata and use relevant keywords in your titles. Also, you can encourage engagement by asking your viewers to like and share your content. Finally, maintain a consistent posting schedule to boost your visibility and gain more views.
2. Viewers Lose Interest in Your Shorts
Another common reason your Shorts might not get as many views as you’d like is that viewers are losing interest in your content. As people’s attention span continues decreasing, everyone is always looking for instant gratification.
So, if you cannot capture your viewers’ attention in the first few seconds and entice them to watch to the end, your retention rate will suffer. Consequently, YouTube won’t recommend your video to more people.
Effective Solution
You can combat this and garner more views by providing high-quality content. Ensure your Shorts are visually appealing, well edited, and convey a clear message. Begin with an attention-grabbing hook or visually striking moment within the first few seconds to entice viewers to keep watching.
Then, implement storytelling techniques and humor to maintain interest throughout the video. Finally, use catchy sound effects or music to set the mood and evoke emotions.
3. Not Using the Proper Hashtags
Hashtags are vital in improving your YouTube Shorts’ discoverability and engagement. But only if you use them properly. Ensure accurate spelling and relevant hashtags in your YouTube Shorts.
While it’s essential to promote branded hashtags for brand recognition, avoid overloading with keywords to align with Google’s guidelines. When you misuse hashtags, your content may not reach the intended audience and could be penalized by the algorithm.
Effective Solution
Research relevant and trending keywords that accurately represent your content to get the most out of your hashtags. Include both popular and niche-specific hashtags to broaden your reach while staying relevant. Also, be keen not to appear spammy.
Target around 3-5 tags per post, and finally, ensure you update your hashtags to match the current trends. That will enhance your visibility and attract more views.
4. Your Shorts are in the Wrong Format
YouTube shorts are designed to have short, vertical content lasting up to 60 seconds. Therefore, content format is very crucial when creating content for Shorts.
Creating horizontal videos will disrupt the viewer experience by leaving unsightly blank spaces on the sides. Also, most people won’t be excited about viewing your content, as horizontal videos are not ideal for shorts in mobile viewing.
Effective Solution
Ensure your Shorts content is vertical, ideally in a 9:16 aspect ratio. Also, keep your video under 60 seconds to align with the Shorts guidelines. Adhering to these format specifications will make your Shorts look more appealing and stand a better chance of attracting more views.
5. Shorts Duration is Too Long
As you can tell from the name, YouTube Shorts are meant to be Short and snappy content. That means if your videos are too long, they will discourage viewers from watching your shorts. When people open the Shorts feed on YouTube, they expect to see concise and to-the-point content.
Unfortunately, if you focus too much on using up all the time, you might end up including a lot of unnecessary information that might make your video less engaging. Probably even increases your bounce rate. And if the algorithm sees you can’t maintain viewers’ interest, they won’t promote your video to more people.
Effective Solution
As much as Shorts gives you up to 60 seconds for your content, you don’t necessarily have to use up all 60 seconds. Focus on delivering your message in the most precise way. The sweet spot is usually 15-30 seconds long.
6. Your YouTube Shorts Need More Time to Gain Traction
Blowing up on Shorts can’t happen overnight despite you having engaging content. It’s important to understand that videos on Shorts might take some time to gain the required Traction. YouTube Shorts may not instantly go viral. It takes time to build momentum. After uploading, YouTube tests them with your regular audience and in the Shorts section.
If your video performs well and holds viewers’ attention, this can speed up the process. YouTube tests Shorts with various audiences to find interested viewers. Over time, this testing decreases, and when it finds an engaged audience, your Short can gain Traction.
Effective Solution
Patience is critical when it comes to YouTube Shorts. That said, continue creating quality content consistently and patiently. It might take a bit of time to notice any spike in your views, but it’s all worth it.
7. Content Quality Needs Improvement
The success of your Shorts videos highly depends on the quality of the videos you’ve uploaded. Poor quality content tends to lose viewers from watching and engaging, leading to low view counts.
Unfortunately, since the Shorts feature is still new to the game, most creators aren’t paying attention to the quality of the content they upload in this segment. Often, you will see creators share low-quality videos, which is the main reason why YouTube shorts are not getting views.
Effective Solution
The first step to getting views on Shorts is taking your time to create high-quality content. Start by investing in quality production equipment and software—for instance, a microphone, camera, or a good smartphone. Next, understand your audience’s preferences and needs.
That way, you can create content that evokes an emotional connection with your audience. Above all, make sure your videos are visually appealing and engaging to keep your audience interested.
8. Lack of Effective Promotion
If your videos are properly optimized, YouTube’s algorithm will present your content to the right crowd, but that’s not enough in most cases. In fact, the lack of adequate promotion could be the main reason your views are not increasing.
YouTube alone is not sufficient to lure your target audience to your videos. Additionally, in case you’ve not learned how to target your specific audience, your chances of getting views will suddenly drop.
Effective Solution
Start by researching the best way to promote your videos to reach your target audience. A good technique you can incorporate is cross-promoting your videos on social media platforms, for instance, Facebook or Instagram. That allows you to leverage your already existing followers.
Once your loyal followers notice that you are creating content on YouTube, they’ll rush to support your channel. That leads to even more views on your Shorts.
9. Too Much Competition
Undoubtedly, YouTube is a highly competitive platform, with content creators uploading new videos almost every day. The number of creators on this platform keeps growing by the day. That means it’s quite challenging to establish your brand voice in such noise.
Effective Solution
The only way to stand out from the crowd is to find creative and unique ways to create your YouTube shorts. An excellent example is by using your humor and storytelling skills to create a fresh perspective in your content. That will immediately set you apart from the rest.
